Dinoflagellate, (division Dinoflagellata), any of numerous one-celled aquatic organisms bearing two dissimilar flagella and having characteristics of both plants and animals. Most are marine, though some live in freshwater habitats. The group is an important component of phytoplankton in all but the colder seas and is an important link in the food chain.
Marine neurotoxins are natural products produced by phytoplankton and select species of invertebrates and fish. These compounds interact with voltage-gated sodium, potassium and calcium channels and modulate the flux of these ions into various cell types. This review provides a summary of marine neurotoxins, including their structures, molecular targets and pharmacologies.
In marine ecosystems, dinoflagellates can become highly abundant and even dominant at times, despite their comparatively slow growth rates. One factor that may play a role in their ecological success is the production of complex secondary metabolite compounds that can have anti-predator, allelopathic, or other toxic effects on marine organisms, and also cause seafood poisoning in humans.
At least 17 dinoflagellate cyst species, including those of the toxic species, Pyrodinium bahamense var. compressum, were identified. P. bahamense may have been present in the area since at least.

The Bad Bug Book chapters about pathogenic bacteria are divided into two main groups, based on the structure of the microbes’ cell wall: Gram negative and Gram positive. A few new chapters have been added, reflecting increased interest in certain microorganisms as foodborne pathogens or as potential sources of toxins. Another new feature is the brief section for consumers that appears in.

The essay seeks an outline of the processes by which the biologies of individual organisms the largest functional, controlled units in the ecosystem - interact and bias the outcomes in favour of particular network structures recognised by ecologists. Populations build, communities assemble, ecosystems function but always in ways that relate to the match between the adaptations and performances.

Marine biology is an adventure, to be sure, but it is also a science. Scientists, including marine biologists, share a certain way of looking at the world. Students of marine biology need to be familiar with this approach and how it affects our understanding of the natural world, including the ocean. We live in an age of science. Advertisers constantly boast of new “scientific.
The Indian River Lagoon (IRL) Species Inventory is an online database that provides comprehensive information on all aspects of IRL biodiversity.Writing about the biology of microalgae is a significant challenge given the enormous diversity of organisms. The classical high level classification of the algae is based mainly on the photosynthetic pigmentation, and this is reflected in the common names such as the green algae, brown algae, red algae, golden brown algae etc. It is clear that in order to understand the evolution of the.Marine Biology, seventh edition, adopts a global perspective to emphasize that the world’s oceans and seas are an integrated system that cannot be understood by looking in any one person’s own backyard. For many students this is a new perspective. One aspect of our global approach is the deliberate inclusion of examples from many different regions and ecosystems so that as many students as.
